Randall, Owner and Founder of Blackbird Communications shared his insights and knowledge on media relations and public relations campaigns. He talked about a campaign he conducted with the Utah Pride Center. When the pandemic hit, they were forced to cancel their pride parade and festival, their largest source of revenue, he said. Donations halted and online engagement dropped and they reached out to him for help. Together they responded by creating messages

emphasizing that the Utah Pride Center is an organization that focus on the health and wellness of the LGBTQ+ community. In a year, Randall and Blackbird Communications were able to double their fans on Facebook and Instagram and have over 100 news media mentions.

In Randall’s eyes the key skills that separate the professionals from the amateurs in communication and public relations are knowing how to research, story tell and create messages, distribute and implement strategy and evaluate and analyze campaigns. Know what is going on in your community and be on top of current events.

“We need right now some good, responsible effective communicators. With all this information that is going on right now; we need people who can determine what is false, what is true, what is credible, what is not and be able to share that in a way that is effective,” said Randall.

Orem, UT – February 20, 2020 – Suzi Brown, the Vice President of Communications for Disneyland Resort spoke to students from Utah Valley University’s Public Relations Student Society of America chapter on February 20, 2020.

“We rarely write press releases anymore,” said Brown. “It is more common for us to break the news ourselves on our Disney Parks Blog. I challenge you to broaden your experience. Step out of the box, employers like to see diversity and creativity. Practice writing more blog posts and do all you can to gain experience in all outlets of the field.”

Brown related majority of her presentation to her behind the scenes experiences with the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Her role was to manage all aspects of media during this intergalactic mission, by managing her internal, external, and executive units. Brown oversees seventy-five people in total for the communications department and works directly with editors in the community and other global media outlets. Brown shared many visuals and demonstrated how people in her department often job swap, which allows them to gather experience from their fellow colleagues.

At the end of the presentation Brown welcomed questions from the audience. One student asked what has the biggest shift in her role since she started working for the mouse. “Social media has caused the biggest shift in the way the park shares new magic. Everything gets posted immediately so timing is very important,” said Brown. Developing cast previews for the new attractions like Rise of the Resistance allowed guests to have an inside look since cast members we able to post pictures from the preview directly to their personal pages.

Brown spoke on several other strategies and ways her teams have communicated the Disneyland message to the public, but she concluded with a few pieces of advice. “Storytelling is everything at Disneyland, but it is also crucial for a career in public relations itself. Learn to articulate your skills. Use those stories and skills to make an impact on the world.”

Orem, UT - October 29, 2019 - Chris Thomas, public relations expert and chief publicist during the Elizabeth Smart crisis spoke to students from Utah Valley University’s Public Relations Student Society of America chapter on crisis communication on October 9, 2019.

“It’s all about messaging in a crisis,” said Thomas. “Ask yourself how you can best frame your message. Learn what the rumors are. What is the craziest thing that can be asked? Anticipate those questions, frame your message and practice.”

Thomas related much of his advice to his experience handling the Elizabeth Smart crisis, when 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart was abducted from her home in 2002. His role was to manage the media during the abduction, rescue and sentencing of her abductors. Because of Smart’s large family, many spoke to the media. Thomas said much of the work done was ensuring that all those speaking were educated on the key messages and remained true to them.

At the end of the presentation Thomas welcomed questions from the audience. One student asked on to manage emotions during a crisis. “In situations such as these, it is highly emotional. If you take it personally, use your emotions as ammunition,” said Thomas. This approach to Smart’s case was well-received as the nation soon found itself sympathizing and working together to find Smart and return her to her family.

Thomas spoke on several other tactics to approaching and managing crises but left with one last message. “Communication is an opportunity to make a difference. The most powerful people are good communicators. Use it to help people and improve the world.”

Students were divided into five teams to create a campaign pitch to the mock board of Pepsi, the professional judges, to receive more positive press coverage for Pepsi after the release of the commercial featuring Kendall Jenner. The students were given 45 minutes to create a media pitch and a campaign to rebuild the reputation of Pepsi after the commercial was pulled.

"All the hard work we put into creating these events is worth it when we see everyone getting a chance to learn from real professionals,” said VP of Events Paige Simpson. “We love giving our students a chance to connect with professionals to enhance their education outside of the classroom.”

The team that took first place each won two tickets to a Jazz game. Their winning pitch was creating a campaign that had Pepsi taking ownership ffor the commercial but moving forward with an emphasis of coming together as a society. The judges gave advice to all the students based off of the winning team’s campaign saying, “Everyone’s first thought when there is a crisis is to try and ‘buy’ your way out of a problem. To be successful, you have to own the problem and then work to move forward.”

“This is my first PRSSA excursion, and I’m excited to learn from some amazing PR professional,” said Kaitlyn Guiver, UVU sophomore and new PRSSA member.  “It will be fun to learn where these experts started, how they got to where they are today and how I can do the same.”

PRSSA finished the excursion at Real Salt Lake stadium by seeing the PR team’s work to filling the seats of Utah’s only professional soccer team. Director of PR and web content for Real Salt Lake Matt Gaschk talked about the work they do to gets fans out to the games and also to show the work the team does outside of the stadium.

“This team is different than the other professional teams here like the Utah Jazz,” Gaschk said. “These players usually stay in Utah in the offseason so anyone can run into them at the stores. These players love the community in Utah and we show that by doing service in the community with the players.”

Read more about UVU PRSSA at uvuprssa.org.

The Executive Board is made up of 14 positions which are filled by paid member students of UVU PRSSA. Each Vice President of each position serves in a variety of different areas such as service or advocacy to digital communication. Each committee fulfills a need within the chapter to better serve the members of PRSSA.

Tanner Kahl, who currently serves as VP of Advocacy, was named President of next year's Executive Board. In his acceptance speech, Kahl expressed that he wants to continue the unity the chapter has built from last year by getting more members active in PRSSA.

“I want more members involved with the everything that goes into the chapter,” Kahl said. “I want them to help the chapter grow with the greatness that is already within the current chapter.”

Bringing a year of experience to the Executive Board, Adam Giddings was named the Vice President of the Executive Board for next year. Even though he may be a junior, he plans on bringing what he learned from last year to move PRSSA forward.

“I gained a lot of experience working as VP of Fundraising,” Giddings said. “I have more PRSSA experience where I don’t necessarily have as much college experience. I want to use that to bring adequate representation to the lower [school] classes and bring them into the organization.”

•   Education Enhanced. A broad range of information was given through the various speakers brought into the conference. Brand-building, government relations, networking skills, food industry communication, airline industry communication, event planning and more PR-relevant topics were discussed.

•   Networks Broadened. PR Elevated hosted over 300 attendees, the largest attendance of any regional conference in the nation for 2017; PRSSA students, professionals and high school students from Utah, Idaho, California and Washington, D.C. attended the conference. Professional networking opportunities, as well as informal social activities were held to give participants time to connect.

The relationships built have and will continue to launch students into future careers.

"I was extremely excited to find out we were a finalist for our category, I was even more excited when we won our category. But winning Best in Show was the cherry on top! We worked so hard on the conference and it was so special to see that hard work recognized amongst PR professionals,” Wade Draper, current UVU PRSSA chapter president and regional conference planner, said.

“My involvement in PR Elevated brought me some of the greatest memories of my college career. I grew exponentially - both personally and professionally - from the experience,” Britnee Bromley-Neuhring, 2016-2017 UVU PRSSA chapter president, said.

Students Learn to Create a Winning Pitch from Local Professionals

OREM, UT - November 15, 2017 - Utah Valley University's chapter of Public Relations Student Society of America (UVU PRSSA) held the event, "Under Pressure: Campaign Competition." Members of PRSSA students competed in creating the best media pitch and advertising campaign in front of a panel of local professionals.

Read more about UVU PRSSA at uvuprssa.org.

The students that were competing were doing more than fighting for bragging rights. First, second and third place winners had the opportunity to win gift cards, movie tickets and Bluetooth speakers.

Students were divided into four teams to create a media pitch for the NFL to save their reputation after players began to take a knee during the national anthem. Each team had to come up with a media pitch as if they were writing to a journalist to cover their story and then they had to create an advertising pitch to show their story. The teams were given one hour to create the media and advertisement pitch.

"After this event, I learned the importance of knowing your audience," James Young said, who was on the team that took second place. "We definitely felt under pressure leading up to the pitch, but then we felt confident once we were up there presenting to the panel."

The team that took first placed focused their message on changing the conversation from kneeling football players to becoming a unified city. The team created a commercial advertising pitch of having the Chicago Bears team serve the family of Laquan McDonald, who was killed by police, by remodeling family's home. Their key message was, "Together, we stand for unity. Together we stand for Laquan.”

"Being able to pitch with little to no preparation was exciting," Kevin Maynes said, a member of the first place team. "My biggest takeaway from this is it's important to trust my team. When I did that, we won as a team."

Fitz-Gerald shared the experience of helping soccer become a popularized sport in a country where it was unpopular. Dean shared what is like being a woman working in a male-dominated community and what she did to set herself apart to be successful in the business.

“I got to learn more about the sports industry and hear from top named professionals about what it's like and what it takes to get there,” communications major senior Lexi Lewis said. “One thing I liked from the Jonathan was how he talked to us about preparing, get involved with as much as you can and gain as much experience as you can now don't wait ’til you graduate. Trey talked to me personally about what stepping stones I need to take to break out from the smaller internships and jobs.”

Each of the presenters shared a common theme about the importance of networking and getting experience now. Many of them were able to work their way up in the companies they work for currently because they understood the importance of getting experience early on and keeping contacts with people who had helped them in the past.

“Working the sports industry, you realize how small the community is,” said Rinehart. “Don’t worry about anything else when reaching out to people. Just focus on getting your foot in the door. Reach out even if you think there isn’t a job opportunity.”

Orem, UT - October 13, 2017 - The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) awarded the chapter at Utah Valley University a Star Chapter Award at the PRSSA National Conference held in Boston, Massachusetts on Monday October 8, 2017. This marks the eighth consecutive Star Chapter Award that UVU PRSSA has received.

For more information on the Star Chapter Awards: http://prssa.prsa.org/star-chapter-award/

“I was extremely happy to receive the Star Chapter Award. The UVU chapter has received this prestigious award every year since the chapter was organized and I’m thrilled we could continue that tradition,” UVU PRSSA President Wade Draper said.

The Star Chapter Award is a certificate of recognition for PRSSA chapters that show exceptional performance in developing professionalism in the industry. In order to be eligible to win this award the chapter must perform certain tasks and activities meant to promote PR in the community as well as strengthen the university’s chapter. Draper said their preparation included, “Initiating and completing a community service project, conducting a high school outreach session and confirming that the chapter has applied for at least one national PRSSA award.” These are just a few of many other requirements that the chapter successfully accomplished.

“My goal as president is to continue to increase our chapter’s national presence. By winning these awards I believe we are fulfilling this goal,” Draper said when asked about his goals for the future of PRSSA.

UVU PRSSA Launches #HumansofPRSSA Social Media Campaign

UVU Joins National PRSSA in Member Diversity Awareness Campaign

Orem, Utah, October 7, 2016 – Utah Valley University’s Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), recently launched a social media campaign, #HumansofPRSSA, to increase awareness of diversity within their school’s PRSSA organization, and the organization’s impact on member’s lives. Highlighted members are asked how they discovered the field of public relations, how they came to be interested in it, and how their membership and involvement in PRSSA has influenced their academic, social and professional skills. Along with a text explanation, the article consists of a photo that allows for social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, to easily access the #HumansofPRSSA post.

 View #HumansofPRSSA posts at: http://www.instagram.com/uvuprssa

“Encouraging others to share from their own perspective about why they are unique helps us to better recognize what we have in common and what makes us diverse…This month, PRSSA will launch its #HumansofPRSSA social media campaign designed to help students develop a better understanding of diversity. As you see members of PRSSA in the spotlight and notice the general, obvious characteristics in regard to identity, age, ethnicity or school, be sure to read between the lines of their stories and words to understand what makes each individual unique and diverse,” said Andrew Cook, PRSSA 2016–2017 National Vice President of Advocacy.

Based off the popular “Humans of New York” blog, the campaign #HumansofPRSSA highlights the stories of individuals’ journeys into the PR world. Students, non-students, members of PRSSA, non-members, and everyone following UVU PRSSA on their social media platforms will be better able to know and understand the diversity of the members from UVU PRSSA. Posts will highlight:

Discovery. Members will enlighten readers of how they discovered their love for the PR industry, as well as how they found themselves as members of their local PRSSA chapters.

Decision. Those highlighted will share their thought process of and why they decided on public relations.

Opportunity. This portion allows members to tell of their experiences, as well as the opportunities that being a member of PRSSA has given them.

“Much like the National Board, we want to recognize our amazing members and give everyone the opportunity to get to know them and their story.” said Wade Draper, Vice President of Advocacy for UVU PRSSA.
